Area is calculated as patio length x width in feet, minus any excluded areas you enter, then a waste percentage is added for cuts and breakage — 5% for stack bond, 8% for running bond, 10% for basketweave, and 15% for herringbone, since diagonal 45-degree cuts waste more material than square ones. Coverage per paver is (paver length in inches x paver width in inches) / 144, computed straight from the paver size fields, and the total area (with waste) is divided by that coverage and rounded up to the next whole paver.

How many pavers do I need per square foot?
Divide 144 (sq in per sq ft) by your paver's length times width in inches. A 12x12 in. paver covers 1 sq ft, so it takes 1 paver per sq ft. A 6x9 in. (Holland) paver covers 0.375 sq ft, so it takes about 2.7 pavers per sq ft. A 4x8 in. (brick) paver covers 0.22 sq ft, about 4.5 pavers per sq ft. A 16x16 in. paver covers 1.78 sq ft, so it takes about 0.56 pavers per sq ft.
Which paver layout pattern wastes the least material?
Stack bond (straight, no offset) wastes the least — about 5% — since every row lines up and cuts are minimal. Running bond needs about 8% for the half-paver offset cuts at row ends. Basketweave needs about 10% since it alternates paired-block orientations. Herringbone wastes the most, about 15%, because every edge is a 45-degree diagonal cut, and diagonal cuts leave more unusable offcuts than square ones.
Do I need edge restraints for a paver patio or walkway?
Yes. Edge restraint (plastic, metal, or a paver edging kit) locks the outer row of pavers in place — without it, the perimeter pavers migrate outward under foot or vehicle traffic, joints open up, and the base and sand underneath erode out from under them. This calculator estimates pavers only; budget separately for edge restraint equal to your patio or walkway's perimeter.
Do I need to fill the joints between pavers with sand?
Yes. After the pavers are laid, sweep polymeric (or regular) jointing sand into the gaps between them to lock the pavers in place, keep them from shifting, and block weed growth. What base do pavers need underneath them?
A compacted crushed-stone base (typically 4 in. for a patio or walkway, deeper for a driveway), topped with about 1 in. of bedding sand that the pavers are set directly into. Skipping the base is the most common cause of paver failure — see our paver base calculator to size that layer.
